In 1956, Captain Gavin L. Field, Master of the Lightship Savannah, retired from the service at the age of seventy. He was the last civilian master of a lightship to serve in the Coast Guard. He joined the U.S. Lighthouse Service in 1937 and stayed in when the Lighthouse Service was merged with the Coast Guard in 1939.
